Mid-Week Meatballs!

Hi, I'm Emma and I am addicted to buying herbs and spices.

You might think I have gone mad but the above is completely true. My fiance and I both LOVE cooking and we try to cook as many fresh meals as possible during the week, which usually results in us fighting over who is 'Head Chef' and who is the 'Sous Chef' that's how much we enjoy it. Sometimes, with us both working full time, it can be time consuming getting all the ingredients fresh for each meal but that is why we have a stock cupboard fullllll to the brim of dried herbs and spices - convenience that tastes great!

My fiance is half Italian so his 'go to' meals usually consist of something with a delicious Ragu or pasta sauce (he honestly makes the best pasta sauce in the world, I will often be caught 'testing it' with a tablespoon while he is out of the room).

Whenever you think of herbs and spices for your cupboards the one brand that usually comes to mind is Schwartz. Growing up, my mum always used Schwartz, and I will always remember the retro iconic logo being in our kitchen. So when I was asked to test out their Italian Herb Seasoning it was an easy answer! YES PLEASE! Another one to add to our ever growing collection.

*Italian Herb Mix RRP £1.60 (or currently on offer in Tesco - 2 for £2.50)*

"Get a little taste of the Mediterranean with a simple shake of this wonderfully blended mix of Italian herbs and spices. Our Italian herb seasoning features a great big burst of oregano, followed by a gentle kick of thyme and basil, rounding off with a little dash of parsley, sage, bay leaves and black pepper. You can't get more authentic than this perfectly balanced blend, so take the hassle out of cooking with this fantastic Italian herb mix."

We decided to make some classic meatballs with the herbs and the results were delicious, and how simple are meatballs! Below is our very easy and straightforward recipe for a tasty, flavourful, mid week meal.

For the meatballs.....

  • Mince (we used reduced fat beef but you can use absolutely any kind)
  • 1x White onion, chopped
  • 1x Egg to bind the meat together
  • Garlic cloves chopped finely - the more the better, well for us anyway!
  • 1x Tablespoon olive oil
  • A pinch of salt & pepper
  • A generous sprinkle Schwartz Italian herb mix.

For the sauce.....

  • 1x 400g tin of chopped tomatoes
  • 1x Tablespoon of tomato puree
  • 1x Teaspoon of sugar
  • A generous sprinkle Schwartz Italian herb mix.

To serve.....

  • Parmesan (or any cheese you fancy)
  • Any form of pasta!

This really is a throw it all together meal but tastes amazingly good!

1. For the meatballs simply mix together all of the ingredients above in a mixing bowl and make into evenly sized balls.

2. Brown the meatballs in a large pan with the oil, turning until each side is browned.

3. In a separate pan pour in the tinned tomatoes, tomato puree, herbs and sugar and simmer.

4. Add the meatballs to the sauce, continue to simmer and cover with a lid for around 30 minutes. This will reduce down and make a thick, flavoursome sauce.

5. Cook some pasta if you fancy it and service with whatever the hell you like! My choice is spaghetti and lashings of Parmesan!

Buon appetito!
